Phoenix Attitude's Medical & Motivation Account came to be after more than 20 years of being a "professional" patient-turned-practitioner. Just like the phoenix, it has given me the ability to rise from the ashes. Anybody who has engaged with the healthcare system knows it can be a rollercoaster ride - we're dealing with a system created by humans, after all - but finding myself needing emergency surgery IN my ICU room in 2011 was the last straw for me. Part of this, yes, had to do with a series of misdiagnoses that I had no control over, but I wanted the chance to get my power back and figure out how to bring my team together, moving forward. "Lucky" for me, I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands as I was looking at a 3-month physical recovery, a medical leave from school, and a new diagnosis of PTSD to deal with.
I'll be honest, I was angry. I was angry that a system meant to support me when I was at my weakest and most vulnerable had all but broken me - body, mind, and spirit. I was angry that, after everything I had been through, I found myself not caring whether I lived or died. This wasn't me. In fact, I prided myself on falling down, yes, but always finding the will to get back up. Ultimately, with time, therapy, friends and family, I started to feel the fire slowly start to reignite in my soul (corny but true). I realized I was not as powerless as I thought. This epiphany saved me in more ways than one, because it was what inspired me to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate what my role as patient entailed. Guess what? Being a patient entitles you a spot on your own healthcare team and I/we deserve to heard and respected. Slowly but surely, I started to figure out how I could use this newfound power to find my voice and my ability to bring the rest of my healthcare team together.
Motivation account is made up of 9 sections coming together to give you the ability to engage with your health in a meaningful way: In Case of Emergency; Need to Know; Doctors; Medication; Symptoms; Surgeries/Procedures; Before My Appointment; My Appointment; Motivation. Each section not only helps you create a foundation of knowledge of how to make the most of your healthcare experience, it helps you to determine what works for you and what doesn't. Not only has it been designed to help you make the most of your physical health, it aims to support your mental health and your spirit! The Medical & Motivation account has given me the opportunity to realize that taking control of your health can't be a part-time job, only getting your attention when things go (very) wrong, taking 30 seconds a day to do a quick scan of how your body, mind and spirit functioned that day not only let's you appreciate your health when it's working, it can also help you catch little issues before they become big issues. What an opportunity!
Not only has every word of content been carefully thought out to give you your money's worth, even the colour scheme was a conscious choice! It's colourful! That's right, we didn't want what I hope becomes your new healthcare sidekick to make you feel like you're stuck in the often-sterile white walls of the hospital or the doctor's office, I wanted you to be reminded of the vibrant person you are! The Motivation section has been built so that you can have a laugh when you're having a bad day or need a distraction, to inspire you, to motivate you, to give you hope, and so that you can see how other people cope and thrive (you didn't think you were alone, did you?).
But here I am asking you to share your life, in the most personal way with this tool that I've built - but is your information safe? Well, to do everything we could to make sure this is the case, we hired Deloitte which serves, "four out of five Fortune Global 500® companies through a globally connected network of member firms in more than 150 countries and territories bringing world-class capabilities, insights and service to address clients' most complex business challenges." I don't want my personal and health information in the wrong hands any more than you do, and it was amazing to see Phoenix Attitude go through testing to understand what we were already doing well to keep your information secure and how we could do (and did) to be better! We’ve gone to great lengths to secure your information (you have enough to worry about already), choosing a data centre to host the website that is ranked among the top in the world. They provide 24/7 secured access with motion sensors, video surveillance and security breach alarms to safeguard your data against intruders.
I have been honoured watching you engage with your Medical & Motivation Account and hearing how it helps or can be improved to be best the best it can. I want you to realize the power that you do have in an area of your life which so many of us have felt intimated by and even worse - powerless in - has been one of the brightest parts of my life. And, hey, $3.99 seems like a pretty good price, eh?
Hopefully one day (soon) taking control of your health won't be something you have to do because something has gone (terribly) wrong. Taking control of your health can and should be about seeing every day as an opportunity to take small steps to slowly build a more confident and competent you - someone who is so much more than your health challenges.
Good Luck! Have fun! And let Phoenix Attitude be a witness to your rise from the ashes - you have worked too hard to get here and you have so much more to do!
